Activists want the South African government to declare a
national state of emergency over the gender-based violence and femicide crisis.

Protesters marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Friday.
The demonstration was led by the organisation, Women for Change, and joined by other civil society groups.
They are calling for swift and tangible measures to tackle the scourge.

They held placards calling condemning the abuse of women and children and calling for justice.
One male protest leader with a loudhailer called for men to join the fight.
“We are calling on all men to protect women. Let them feel safe around us.”
The protesters planned to hand over a petition to the Presidency and the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities.
